The formal research collaborations established through the CNP allow investigators to coordinate their research and grant-related activities, thereby enabling them to be highly competitive for large individual as well as "center" type grants.

The CNP operates primarily through research grants and contracts from state, regional, and federal grant agencies and also from the private sector. These include grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the U.S. National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Current grant funds for CNP investigators total more than $3 million.

CNP investigators, Drs. Reynolds, Redmer and Wallace, recently received a five-year, $1.5 million grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health entitled, "Nutrition, Fetal Growth, and Placental Angiogenesis." For more information on this grant, click here.

Similarly, Drs. Caton, Vonnahme and Redmer recently were awarded a three-year, $420,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Research Initiative entitled, "Effects of Maternal Undernutritionand High Selenium During Gestation on Growth and Vasculation of Key Nutrient Transferring Tissues."

"These are examples of the types of multidisciplinary and large center grants for which the CNP enables us to be competitive. The results of these efforts will have a tremendous impact on human health and the livestock, productivity. In addition, the graduate and undergraduate training efforts of the CNP will provide outstanding career opportunities for our graduates."

- Dr. Larry Reynolds, CNP Co-Director
